Progression of Gyekenyes turned 180 degree in the last decade. Former a closed, border side village turned an open-minded , constructive vision of tourism are planned for the locals. The digging and the Danube-Drava National Park is a natural treasure that is taking advantage of an upturn in the village. At first it was discovered the possibilities for divers and more prestigious competition venue has become a lake , and then other parts of the country came to relax , and the line was built between summer and winter resting their houses , and finally settled foreigners. The old coastal fisching shack rebuilt comfortable buildings with heating and pier , where you can spend the night waiting for anglers to catch the bait.
The M7 highway, Nagykanizsa city on the east exit, through the city center, and after throug Surd, Zákány villages. The distace from Nagykanizsa is about 24 km. Gyekenyes is also accessible on road 61, turning down at city of Csurgó.
The water area is over 300 hectares. The lake is crystal clear. You can fishing at shore or by boat as well, using fishing floats or ledger rig. It is the only lake where freshwater jellyfish live. The Gyékényes gravel pit lake is mined today too. That is why the looks of lake is so exciting. The average depth is 10m, in some places up to 17m.
